CORAL GABLES, FL - Junior Tara Booker and redshirt sophomore Brooke Wilson combined for 33 points and 25 rebounds, but it wasn't enough for the George Washington women's basketball team to knock off Morgan State in a 70-66 overtime loss to the Lady Bears at the Miami Holiday Classic Wednesday night.
Booker posted career-highs of 22 points, six 3-pointers and 13 rebounds and Wilson added an 11-point, 12-rebound double-double for GW (5-8), which lost its fourth straight.
Junior Sara Mostafa finished with a season-high 15 points and three blocks. The trio of Booker, Wilson and Mostafa combined for 48 points on 17-of-35 shooting, while the rest of the Colonials finished just 8-of-33 from the floor.
After trailing throughout the first half and by as much as 13 points early in the second half, the Colonials battled back to force four ties and six lead changes over the final 12 minutes of regulation.
A 16-3 run pulled GW even for the first time at 38-38 with 11:43 remaining, then Booker made her fifth of six 3-pointers on the night for a 41-38 edge. The teams would then battle back-and-forth to the end of regulation.
Brittany Dodson made two foul shots with 18 seconds left to give Morgan State a 58-57 lead, but Booker was fouled on a putback attempt with 1.5 seconds to go and made the front end to tie it at 58-58 and send the game to overtime.
Booker started the extra session with two more free throws for a 60-58 advantage, but the Lady Bears scored the next seven points and closed overtime with a 12-6 run for the four-point victory.
Dodson led four Morgan State (6-5) players in double figures with 26 points - 21 of which came after halftime. Theresa Davis scored 15 off the bench and Erin Hawkins and Brittany Noel each pitched in 10.
A deciding factor of the contest came at the foul line, where the Lady Bears converted 20-of-23 attempts, including 8-of-9 to clinch victory in the extra session. The Colonials, who featured six players over 6-feet tall compared to one for the Lady Bears, held a commanding 50-31 edge on the boards, but surrendered 24 points on 17 turnovers.
GW concludes its non-conference schedule at Rutgers Monday, Jan. 3, at 7:30 pm.
