WASHINGTON - Tied at 53-53 with 4:51 remaining, Rice converted 8-of-10 free throws during an 11-0 run to pull away and defeat the George Washington women's basketball team, 65-57, at Charles E. Smith Center Saturday afternoon.
Sophomore Kay-Kay Allums posted career-highs of 18 points and nine rebounds and GW (3-9) made a season-high eight three-pointers, but Rice (5-7) knocked down a season-best nine triples and rallied late to post its third consecutive victory.
GW held a halftime lead, 35-32, for the first time in 10 games, but shot just 25.8 percent (8-of-31) in the second half to drop its ninth in 10 contests.
The Colonials matched their largest lead of the game at 43-36 on a Megan Nipe three pointer with 15:03 remaining. The Owls scored seven unanswered to pull even, 43-43, with 10:48 to play and traded the lead five times over the next five minutes.
Allums 15-foot jumper knotted the game for the final time at the 4:51 mark. Rice's Jackie Stanley made two of her 10 free throws 11 seconds later to jumpstart the game-winning run. The Colonials managed just two baskets, both within the final six seconds, over the final 4:51 in losing their third straight to the Owls.
Stanley led all scorers with 22 points, followed by 16 from Tara Watts and 11 from Morgan Mayse. Rice converted 9-of 20 three-point attempts and 18-of-22 free throws.
Sophomore Sara Mostafa posted her third double-double of the season with 12 points and 10 rebounds and freshman Shi-Heria Shipp added 10 points off the bench to round out GW's double-digit scorers. Redshirt freshman Brooke Wilson grabbed nine rebounds, her fourth straight game with nine-or-more boards.
The Colonials finished at 34.4 percent (22-of-64) from the field, including 30.8 percent on a season-high 26 three-point tries.
A moment of silence for Trustee Emeritus Robert H. Smith, son of the namesake of GW's home court Charles E. Smith, was held prior to opening tip.
The Colonials wrap their four-game homestand at Charles E. Smith Center with their Atlantic 10 Conference opener next Saturday, Jan. 9, against Dayton at 2:00 pm.
