PITTSBURGH, PA - The George Washington University baseball team picked up a big win in Pittsburgh on Friday afternoon when they held off the Duquesne Dukes by a 7-5 score. Sophomore Eric Cantrell threw eight innings, allowing five earned runs and striking out seven.
The offense was led by senior Gavin Swanson who had four RBIs and junior Tom Zebroski who had three hits and scored a run.
The Colonials were able to strike early and often as they scored two runs in the second inning and four more in the third inning to take a 6-3 lead after the first three innings. Swanson was responsible for both big hits in each inning, with an RBI single in the second inning and a three-RBI double with two outs in the third to break the game open.
This led the way for Cantrell to pitch with a lead and keep the Colonials in the game before handing it over to junior Ryan Lapointe, who picked up his second save of the season with a scoreless ninth inning.
George Washington now sits in a tie for seventh place in the A-10 conference and are just a half game away from being in the top sixth, which would put them in position to play in the A-10 conference tournament. The victory lifted the Colonials to 7-8 in A-10 conference play, with eight more league games to go on the schedule.
The two teams will return to the field tomorrow when they face off at 1:00 p.m
