Baseball Drops A Pair at Winthrop

ROCK HILL, SC - The George Washington University baseball team struggled at Winthrop in losing two more games on Sunday, but with a long string of home games coming up the squad will look to get back on track starting in next weekend's games. The Colonials dropped a 10-5 decision to Eastern Michigan early in the morning and lost 18-2 against Winthrop in the second game of the doubleheader.
In the first game, Tom Zebroski and and Sean Rockey each had three hits in the loss and Chris Holland chipped in two of his own. The Colonials cut the lead to 5-3 after scoring a run in the bottom of the sixth, but gave up four runs in the eighth inning which pushed the Eagle lead out to 9-3. Chris Neary (0-1) took the loss, while allowing three earned runs in five innings on seven hits. Junior Ryan Pointe relieved Neary for the final four innings and allowed one earned run and struck out three.
The Colonials will continue with another game today against host Winthrop as they try to avenge their loss yesterday to the Eagles. First pitch is set for 2:00 p.m.
SECOND GAME: Winthrop 18, George Washington 2
In the second game of the doubleheader, the Colonials lost an 18-2 decision after giving up 11 runs in the second inning. Jimmy Duggan got the start for the Colonials and struggled, only lasting one inning and giving up six earned runs.
Sophomore Tom Gately came in relief and threw four innings and gave up six earned runs. Freshman Jay Lively came in for the final three innings and gave up three earned and struck out five.
Chris Marsicano had the only extra base hit for the Colonials and Curtis Eward had the only RBI on the afternoon. The Colonials will look to rebound as they play in their home opener next Saturday, February 28 at 2:00 p.m against Lehigh. The two teams are also scheduled to play a doubleheader the following day, with the first game scheduled to begin at 12:00 p.m.
