FAIRFAX, VA - Sophomore Tiana Myers led the George Washington women's basketball team in scoring for the third straight game with 14 points, but George Mason used a 12-0 run midway through the second half to pull away and defeat the Colonials, 63-53, at Patriot Center Tuesday evening.
The loss was the seventh straight for GW (2-7), matching the program's longest slide set during the 1981-82 season. Mason (7-3) set a new program mark with its seventh consecutive home victory to start the season.
Myers was 4-of-12 from the field and 6-of-6 at the line to pace GW with 14 points. Freshman Megan Nipe knocked down a trio of three-pointers in the second half and finished with 11 points, while redshirt freshman Brooke Wilson added six points, nine rebounds and three steals in 33 minutes. Rookie Janine Davis failed to score, but handed out a career-high six assists.
Fresh off a 14-day hiatus, GW started strong against Mason, grabbing a five-point lead at 16-11 on Shi-Heria Shipp's fast-break layup with 8:10 to play in the first half. Myers converted a pair of free throws to push to 18-13, but the Patriots closed the period with a 14-4 run to lead 27-22 at halftime.
Mason pushed the spurt to 25-10 to grab a double-digit lead, 38-28, for the first time, but Wilson and Shipp cut the deficit back to single digits at 40-34 with 12:07 left. The Colonials failed to score over the next 4:14 as the Patriots scored 12 unanswered points to grab their largest lead, 52-34, with 8:11 to play.
Nipe hit two of her three triples during a 12-5 run to get the Colonials as close as 59-48 with 2:29 remaining, but Mason responded with a pair of free throws and a jumper to quell the rally and beat GW for the third time in as many meetings.
Brittany Eley led four Mason players in double figures with 19 points, followed by 14 from Brittany Poindexter, 11 from Amber Easter and 10 from Rahneeka Saunders. Rashauna Hobbs, daughter of GW men's basketball coach Karl Hobbs, missed a three-point attempt in eight minutes of action for the Patriots.
GW shot 20-of-55 from the field (36.4 percent) to finish below 40 percent shooting and 60 points for the seventh straight game. Mason converted 23-of-52 shots (44.2 percent) and 17-of-25 free throws while outrebounding GW, 41-28.
GW plays its first of four straight home games at Charles E. Smith Center Monday, Dec. 28, against Western Kentucky. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 pm.
