KNOXVILLE, TN - Sophomore Kay-Kay Allums scored a career-high 16 points as the George Washington women's basketball team lost to No. 6/5 Tennessee, 93-53, in front of 12,840 spectators at Thompson-Boling Arena in Knoxville, TN, Tuesday evening.
GW (2-4), playing its fourth straight road game and third contest during a week-long road trip, surrendered 54 points in the paint and 32 points off 18 turnovers to a much larger and deeper Tennessee lineup.
Allums finished 5-of-11 from the field and converted all five of her foul shots for 16 points while adding six rebounds. Sophomore Tiana Myers chipped in 11 points, along with a career-high-tying 11 from freshman Megan Nipe, while redshirt freshman Brooke Wilson grabbed a career-high nine boards to lead the Colonials.
Alyssia Brewer, a 6-foot-3 forward, scored a career-high 23 points on 11-of-15 shooting to lead three Lady Volunteers in double figures. Shekinna Stricklen - 17 points, 10 rebounds - and Glory Johnson - 16 points, 12 rebounds - added double-doubles for Tennessee, which won its sixth straight to start the season.
GW scored on its first two possessions, prompting Tennessee to call timeout, and led 8-7 at the first media timeout.
However, the Lady Volunteers asserted their size - a pair of three-point plays from Johnson - and shooting - three pointers from Stricklen and Angie Bjorklund - during a 29-9 run which put the Colonials down 38-19 with 7:23 to play in the first half.
Allums converted a three-point play with 6:55 left in the period to close to 38-22, but that would be the Colonials last field goal of the first half as UT scored 16 of the last 18 points to lead 54-24 at the half.
The Colonials kept the 12,000-plus UT faithful on their feet for more than three minutes and Allums scored on a baseline drive and three-pointer to make it 54-29. Bjorklund connected on consecutive three-pointers during a quick eight-point spurt to quell GW's rally.
GW scored seven unanswered in a span of 44 seconds - with a three and fast-break layup from Myers - to make it 77-46 with 5:21 left. Tennessee's 16-4 run made it a 42-point margin with less than a minute to play until Nipe stuck in a putback with 0.2 seconds left for the 93-53 final.
The teams' shot a combined 8-of-38 from three-point range, with GW converting just 3-of-16 attempts, but Tennessee went 31-of-54 inside the arc to finish at 47.4 percent from the floor. The Colonials shot under 35 percent (34.4) for the third straight game in dropping their fourth in a row.
GW wraps its five-game road swing with a second straight SEC opponent, at Auburn Saturday at 2:00 pm EST.
