REHOBOTH BEACH, DE - GW junior Cole Turner (Marion, IN) fired a two-round 145 (76-69) to place second at the seventh annual Rehoboth Beach Fall Invitational Monday on the Delaware Shore. The 36-hole tournament, hosted by The George Washington University, was held at the par-71, 6,480-yard Kings Creek C.C. in Rehoboth Beach, DE.
The Colonials placed second in the 10-team field coming off their victory at Navy just 24 hours earlier. Penn, coached by former GW coach, Scott Allen, won the tournament by four strokes over the Colonials. Penn's Michael Blodgett was the individual medalist with a 139 that included a second-round 69.
Appearing in his first collegiate event, GW freshman, Martin Liu (Hong Kong) had an impressive day placing third overall by shooting 76-72 (148). Turner and teammates Sebastian Palomares (Bogota, Colombia) and Javier Ballesteros (Santander, Spain) each carded six birdies over the 36 holes.
"The guys got off to a slow start in the morning round but played much better in the afternoon," GW coach Terry Shaffer said. "They were a little sluggish and tired early on from the quick turnaround after the Navy tournament."
The Colonials' B team shot a 615 (291-294) to finish fourth, two strokes behind Brown. Colonials' freshman Brendan Barrack (Toronto, ONT) tied for fourth place with a 150 (78-72) among 53 entrants, just ahead of A-10 Performer of the Week, Lewis Sturdy (Keston, England) with a 151 (73-78). Barrack and senior Eddie Newland (Piedmont, CA) each birdied five holes on the day.
GW has won the event three times in its seven-year history.
The Colonials next play in the 54-hole Adams Cup of Newport, Sept. 22-23, at Newport, RI. The event will take place at the par-72, 7,200-yard Newport National Golf Club.
