ARLINGTON, VA - Behind strong pitching from Chris Neary (Phoenix, AZ/Sunnyslope/Scottsdale CC) and Brian Frazier (Allentown, PA/Emmaus), the game one and game two starters, respectively, George Washington swept a doubleheader against MD-Eastern Shore Wednesday afternoon at Barcroft Park in Arlington, VA. GW took game one, 7-2, and then won the nightcap, 4-1. Both games were seven inning contests. The twin bill was required when Tuesday's game, originally scheduled on the campus on UMES, was postponed due to rain.
In the opening game, GW and UMES (5-41) went back and forth and were tied 2-2 after three innings of play before the Colonials seized control with five unanswered runs over the course of the final four innings. GW took the lead for good in the bottom of the fourth with two outs when Tom Zebroski (Port Washington, NY/Paul Schreiber) drove in two runs with a double to the fence in right-center. GW had originally taken the lead with a Curtis Eward (Oakton, VA/Oakton) two-RBI double down the left-field line in the bottom of the first inning.
Junior LHP Chris Neary, who allowed just one earned run and scattered seven hits in 6.0 innings pitched, held UMES in check. Sophomore RHP Faizan Choudhry (Langley, BC/Langley Secondary) worked a perfect seventh inning to preserve the 7-2 GW victory.
The strong GW pitching continued in day's second game, as senior Brian Frazier worked a complete game in his first start of the season, holding UMES to just four hits and one unearned run. Frazier struck out three and faced just five batters more than the minimum.
Offensively, GW relied on the long-ball in game two. Andrew Haberern (Emmaus, PA/Emmaus/Trinity College) led-ff the bottom of the third inning with a solo home run, his third of the season, to give GW a 1-0 lead. After UMES pushed across an unearned run in the top of the fourth to tie the game, Gavin Swanson (Reisterstown, MD/Calvert Hall College HS) hit a two-run homer (7) in the bottom of the frame, staking the Colonials to a 3-1 advantage. GW added their final run in the sixth on a Will Cooper (McLean, VA/Gonzaga College HS) RBI-single.
In the two games, Andrew Abokhair was 3-for-6 with two runs and Gavin Swanson finished with three RBI. Both players currently have nine-game hitting streaks.
George Washington (22-23, 8-10 A-10) hosts Temple (20-22. 11-7 A-10) in a three-game Atlanitc 10 Conference series this weekend at Barcoft Park in Arlington, VA. The first game is Friday, May 2, at 4:00 p.m.
