Baseball Drops Doubleheader as Dayton Complete Sweep

ARLINGTON, VA - George Washington baseball was outscored 14-4 as Dayton took both games of Saturday's doubleheader at Barcroft Park in Arlington, VA. The Flyers took game one, 7-1, and won game two, 7-3, to complete the three game sweep of the Atlantic 10 Conference series. The two teams played two games on Saturday due to impending inclement weather forecasted for Sunday.
Dayton is now 22-16 overall, 7-8 in the A-10, while the Colonials fell to 17-21, and 6-9 in league-play. GW has dropped 10 of their past 11 games.
In Saturday's game one, Dayton got a complete-game effort from their starting pitcher for the second day in a row as they cruised past GW, 7-1. The Flyers' Quinn Haselhorst (4-1) allowed just one run and scattered nine hits as he struck out nine in nine innings of work. GW starter Eric Cantrell (Oakton, VA/Oakton) suffered the loss (4-4) after allowing four runs on six hits and striking out seven.
Dayton took the early lead in game one, scoring four in the top of the fourth inning courtesy of a Cole Tyrell two-RBI double down the leftfield line and a Jacob Spaeth two-RBI single through the right side. GW answered with a run in the bottom of the sixth, when senior OF Charlie Kruer (Old Bridge, NJ/Old Bridge) hit the first pitch he saw over the fence in center for a solo home run, making it 4-1.
As the Colonial bats struggled to get going, Dayton put the game away with three runs in the top of the ninth, scoring two on Jake Hoover's two-RBI single down the line in left. Hoover eventually scored on a passed ball to give the Flyers their final 7-1 advantage. Junior Tim Reeves (Cumming, GA/North Forsyth) finished the game 3-for-4.
In the day's second game, Dayton jumped out to a 5-1 lead after two innings of play. The Flyers plated two in the top of the first and extended their lead to 5-0 in the second on a three-run home run hit by Scott Dunwoody. GW erased the shutout in the bottom of the frame, when, with the bases loaded, Gavin Swanson (Reisterstown, MD/Calvert Hall College HS) reached on an infield single, forcing home a run to cut into the Dayton lead, 5-1.
In the sixth inning, the Flyers and the Colonials exchanged one-run frames. Dayton pushed across a run in the top, with a Jacob Spaeth two-out, RBI-single, and then GW's Charlie Kruer responded with a solo homer to deep center field in the bottom of the inning, making it 6-2. It was Kruer's second home run of the afternoon and eighth of the season.
A Kevin Miller RBI-single in the top of the eighth made it 7-2 in favor of Dayton. GW's Andrew Abokhair (Ashburn, VA/Broad Run) led of the bottom of the ninth with a solo home run to make it 7-3, but that was as close as the Colonials would come in the day's night cap as the Flyers hung on for the win.
Dayton's starting pitcher Alex Dye earned the win (3-1) after he allowed just two runs and seven hits in eight innings pitched. GW's Pat Lehman (Fair Lawn, NJ/Fair Lawn) was tagged with the loss (4-3) after surrendering seven runs on 11 hits in 7.2 innings pitched.
George Washington returns to action on Wednesday, Apr. 22, when they play MD-Baltimore County at 7:00 p.m.
