BALTIMORE, MD - George Washington scored 10 unanswered run and snapped a five-game losing streak Tuesday night with an 11-3 win over MD-Baltimore County in Baltimore, MD. The win, GW's second in their past 11 games overall, avenged a loss to UMBC (12-23) from earlier this season, when the Retrievers won 14-4 (Apr. 1).
Junior Tim Reeves (Cumming, GA/North Forsyth) led the way for GW offensively Tuesday night, hitting 3-for-5 with a pair of doubles and three RBI as he batted from the third spot for just the second time this season. Gavin Swanson (Reisterstown, MD/Calvert Hall College HS) was 2-for-4 with a solo home run (5).
Sophomore LHP Bobby Lucas (Baltimore, MD/Calvert Hall College HS) earned his fourth win of the year in just his second start. Lucas allowed just two earned runs on five hits in seven innings of work as he improved to 4-0. Junior Jimmy Duggan (Jefferson, MD/St. John's Prospect Hall) worked the final two frames and did not allow a hit while striking out four of the nine batters he faced.
Trailing 2-0, GW manufactured a run in the top of fourth. Andrew Abokhair (Ashburn, VA/Broad Run) singled, stole second and then advanced to third. He scored three batters later on a sacrifice fly hit by sophomore Curtis Eward (Oak Hill, VA/Oakton).
GW added three runs in the fifth, scoring on three consecutive at-bats with an UMBC fielding error, a sacrifice bunt and an RBI-single, to take their first lead of the game 4-3.
The Colonials made it 5-3 in the sixth, plating a run on a Tom Zebroski (Port Washington, NY/Paul Schreiber) groundout that drove in Gavin Swanson. GW added another run in the seventh when Chris Holland (Pasadena, MD/Chesapeake) scored from third on a passed ball, to give the Colonials a 6-3 leads.
Two runs in the eighth and another three in the ninth scored by GW officially put the game out of reach. In the top of the eighth, with runners at first and second and two out, Tim Reeves doubled to right field and cleared the bases. In the ninth, Gavin Swanson hit a solo home run, his first since the 17-5 win at Virginia (Mar. 26), to give GW the 9-3 advantage.
The Colonials added their final two runs of the game when three of the next four batters doubled, getting another two-bagger from Reeves and one each from Zebroski and Andrew Haberern (Emmaus, PA/Emmaus).
George Washington (18-21) returns home on Wednesday to play host to James Madison (27-10) at Barcroft Park, at 3:00 p.m.
