Baseball Falls to James Madison in 11 Innings

ARLINGTON, VA - After six scoreless frames in which George Washington and James Madison remained in a 5-5 tie, the Dukes broke through with three runs in the top of the 11th inning as they defeated the Colonials, 8-5, Wednesday afternoon at Barcroft Park, in Arlington, VA. It was GW's first game in extra innings this season.
GW (18-22) took a 4-1 lead after the first two innings of play. The Colonials pushed across a run in the top of the first as Sean Rockey (Sammamish, WA/Eastlake/Columbia Basin CC) led-off with a single and then scored on a Tim Reeves (Cumming, GA/North Forsyth) RBI-single into leftfield. GW added three runs in the bottom of the second, plating two when Tom Zebroski (Port Washington, NY/Paul Schreiber) singled into left. Reeves followed with another single through the right side to make it 4-1.
JMU (28-10) scored four runs in the fourth to take a slim 5-4 lead. The Dukes sent 10 batters to the plate and took advantaged of three consecutive hit batters before Alex Foltz's double to left scored a pair of runs.
The Colonials tied it at five with another run in the fourth. Rockey led-off with a double into left-center, and then scored three batters later when Andrew Abokhair (Ashburn, VA/Broad Run) doubled to the fence in left.
The score remained knotted at five for the next six innings, thanks in large part to GW sophomore RHP Ryan Lapointe (Somersworth, NH/Phillips Exeter Academy). LaPointe entered the game with two outs in the top of fourth and allowed no runs and just four hits while striking out five in the next 6.1 innings of work. The GW bats were held in check by JMU pitching, as they recorded just two hits over the finals six frames.
In the top of the 11th, the Dukes broke through with three runs. They scored the go-ahead run on McKinnon Langston's RBI-single into right field. Two batters later, pitcher Trevor Kaylid, who was playing right field at the time and making his first career plate appearance, doubled deep to left-center to score two runs and give JMU their 8-5 advantage they would not relinquish.
JMU's Trevor Knight pitched the finals two innings and got the win (6-1), while GW's Jimmy Duggan (Jefferson, MD/St. John's Prospect Hall) was tagged with the loss and fell to 0-2.
George Washington takes to the road this weekend, playing at St. Louis for a three-game, Atlantic 10 Conference series, beginning Friday, Apr. 25, at 7:00 p.m.
