Gabriel, Yaniga Lead Softball To Split of Doubleheader With Bucknell

WASHINGTON, DC - Behind a three-hit pitching performance by sophomore Amanda Gabriel and a two-run single by senior Jackie Yaniga, the George Washington Colonials (4-7) won the opener of its doubleheader against the Bucknell Bison, 2-1 Sunday afternoon at Mount Vernon Softball Field. Bucknell (3-8) defeated GW, 10-5 in the second game.

Down by one through two and a half innings in the opener, the Colonials rallied to take a lead that they would not relinguish. Gabriel also produced with the bat as she drew a free pass to lead off the inning. A groundout by senior Chrysanthi Halkiotis advanced her to second. After junior Carrie Higdon also walked, freshman Katie Terrazas hit behind the runners in a groundout, advancing both Gabriel and Higdon. Yaniga then delivered with a sharp single through the left side, scoring Gabriel and the speedy Higdon all the way from second.

Bucknell had all three of its hits in game one in the second inning as AGabes (3-4) shut down the Bison the remaining five-plus innings, allowing just a walk and two runners who reached on errors. The right-hander from Fullerton, CA, recorded her fifth complete game in seven starts, while allowing just one earned run on three hits and a walk, while also striking out 10.

Yaniga finished 3-3 with the game-winning two-run single to pace GW offensively. Halkiotis, Terrazas, redshirt-sophomore Elisa Van Kirk and senior Katie Miller also recorded hits in the opener, while Higdon reached twice on walks from Bucknell pitcher Christie Wiest.

Freshman Ali Pardo started in the circle for GW in the nightcap and pitched two scoreless innings to start the game. The Colonials actually took the lead in the bottom of the second off a solo home run by Miller, her second of the season.

Bucknell then erupted for eight runs in the next two innings to take an 8-1 lead.

GW cut the lead to five in their half of the fourth with a pair of runs of their own. With two-outs, Gabriel started the charge with a single up the middle. A double to left center by Halkiotis put two runnners in scoring position for Higdon, who singled through the left side to score Gabriel. Higdon then stole second and Terrazas reached on an error by the shortstop, which scored Halkiotis.

Bucknell answered right back with two more runs in the fifth, which ended Pardo's (1-2) night after 4.1 innings of work. Higdon then came into relief and pitched a scoreless final two and two-thirds allowing just two hits.

Halkiotis connected on a two-run single in the GW half of the fifth to score sophomore Amanda Holst and Miller.

Halkiotis led the Colonials' offense in game two with three hits and two RBIs. Carrie Higdon also recorded a pair of hits and three stolen bases. Yaniga, Miller, Holst and Gabriel also had hits for GW.

The Colonials are back in action Thursday, March 13 when they travel to Philadelphia to take on La Salle in its Atlantic 10 opener at 2:00 pm. The doubleheader will actually be played on the campus of Temple University and GW will be the home team since La Salle played GW in a home game in Washington, DC last season due to inclement weather.
