Baseball Opens 2008 Season with Win over NJIT, 12-5

SPARTANBURG, SC - Sophomore SS Sean Rockey and senior OF Charlie Kruer combined for seven hits and seven RBI to lead George Washington (1-0) in the team's 2008 season opener, a 12-5 win over the New Jersey Institute of Technology (0-2), early Saturday afternoon at the Courtyard by Marriott Baseball Classic hosted by USC Upstate at Harley Park in Spartanburg, SC.
Kruer and Rockey each had two doubles as part of their seven total hits. Junior Pat Lehman (1-0) threw six innings of one-run ball, as he scattered seven hits and struck out five while allowing just one walk.
In all, the Colonials pounded out 15 hits, as they scored in all but two innings and had eight different players record at least one hit. Junior Doug Eizen, who got the start at third base, finished 3-for-5 with two RBI.
In addition to Rockey, two other Colonials saw their first action in a collegiate baseball game. Brendon Kelliher started in leftfield and recorded his first career hit, finishing 1-for-5, while Oliver Killoren saw his first at-bat as a pinch-hitter.
Because of rain on Friday, George Washington will play Tennessee Martin later today, at 6:00 p.m. as the Courtyard by Marriott Baseball Classic Continues. In the tournament's opening game played Friday night, USC Upstate, in their Division I debut, defeated NJIT, 8-3. The Colonials will face the host-school Spartans Sunday at 2:00 p.m.
