WASHINGTON, DC - Senior preseason Wooden Award candidate Jessica Adair narrowly missed a double-double with 15 points and nine rebounds, but DT3 went on a 13-5 run during the final 2:30 to knock off the George Washington women's basketball team, 71-66, in an exhibition contest at Charles E. Smith Center Wednesday evening.
First-year head coach Mike Bozeman's squad shot a solid 46.9 percent (30-of-64) from the field, grabbed 47 rebounds and assisted 20-of-30 baskets. However, the Colonials' inexperience -- four freshmen in their first collegiate action and five returners with no more than five career starts each -- showed in the form of 28 turnovers and 20 fouls, which led to 17 combined points for DT3.
Sophomore Erica Rivera's driving lay-up gave GW a 61-58 lead with 2:39 left to play, but Jasmine Byrd made three-pointers on the next two possessions to give DT3 the lead for good at 64-61 with 2:08 remaining.
DT3 converted six free throws to move ahead by seven when senior Antelia Parrish hit a three-pointer to close within four, 70-66, with 28 seconds to go. Valarie Muneoke missed a pair of free throws to give GW a chance to trim its deficit to one, but Parrish missed long on a three-point attempt and Kalika France made 1-of-2 free throws to clinch the victory.
The Colonials spent much of the game playing catch-up until rookie Kay-Kay Allums' three-pointer with 12:30 remaining gave the hosts their first lead in nearly 23 minutes. Another Allums jumper and a 10-footer from freshman Sara Mostafa gave GW its largest lead, 52-47, with 11:24 to play.
The teams' traded the lead two more times before Byrd's late three-point barrage guided DT3 to victory. France led all scorers with 20 points and added six rebounds and five assists. Byrd finished with 16.
All 12 players who played for GW scored, led by Jessica Adair's 15 and Allums' nine points. Adair, Parrish and redshirt sophomore Ivy Abiona, who saw game action for the first time in 20 months after missing last season with a knee injury, each grabbed a game-high nine rebounds.
GW, which is receiving points in both the Associated Press and ESPN/USA Today Coaches' Top 25 polls, hosts Maryland-Baltimore County in its season opener Saturday, Nov. 15, at 2:00 pm.
