Elana Meyers Signs Professional Contract With Mid-Michigan Ice

MIDLAND, MI - Former George Washington softball player Elana Meyers has signed a professional contract with the Mid-Michigan Ice of National Pro Fastpitch (NPF), Ice General Manager Jason Newsham announced on Friday.
Newsham feels that Meyers' ability to play multiple positions will help keep her somewhere on the field, and more importantly, in the lineup. "I'm very excited to play in the city of Midland," said Meyers. "The community embraces their sports and the Ice fans are very supportive and enthusiastic. I am very blessed to be in such a wonderful city and to play with such wonderful people."
The 2007 First Team Academic All-America honoree led the Colonials in several offensive categories including batting average (.413), runs (26), hits (59), doubles (14), RBIs (25), total bases (82), slugging percentage (.662), on-base percentage (.485), sacrifice flies (3), and sacrifice hits (9) in her final season. Meyers hit an astonishing .532 in conference-only games, which led the A-10. She also led the league in hits, doubles, and total bases in A-10 games en route to garnering NFCA First Team All-Region honors.
After becoming the first GW softball signee, Meyers started all 192 of GW's all-time games. Meyers leaves Foggy Bottom as GW's all-time career leader in batting average (.356), on-base percentage (.430), runs (111), hits (202), doubles (32), triples (15), total bases (297), walks (63), and stolen bases (68). The Douglasville, GA, native was also the first Colonial to receive All-Conference accolades and earned First Team All A-10 and A-10 Softball Student-Athlete of the Year honors in both the 2006 and 2007 seasons.
Meyers is thankful for all of the support she has gotten from others and credits them for her success. "God has blessed me with the opportunity and ability to play softball at the next level," Meyers said. "My experiences both on and off the field at GW have well prepared me, and each of my teammates and coaches throughout my five years in the department have helped me fulfill my dream of playing pro softball."
Meyers will return to the DC area July 5-8 when the Ice takes on the Washington Glory at the George Mason Softball Complex. Thursday through Saturday's games, commence at 7:05 pm, while Sunday's contest is slated for a 3:05 pm start.
GW (23-27, 9-11 A-10) is coming off the best season in its five-year history of the program. The Colonials appeared in their first-ever Atlantic 10 Tournament in 2007 as the No. 6 seed. GW held leads in both opening round games versus No. 3 seed, Saint Louis, and No. 5 seed, Charlotte, but were defeated in both contests.
