Rhode Island Completes Sweep of GW Baseball

KINGSTON, RI - Rhode Island (19-24, 13-8 A-10) took an early 6-0 lead and controlled the rest of way, as they downed George Washington (17-30-1, 9-12 A-10) in the third and final game of their Atlantic 10 Conference series early Sunday afternoon at Bill Beck Field, by a final of 6-2.
GW took an early lead, their first of the series, in the top of the first inning. After a groundout to lead off the game, Mickey Shupin (Sea Girt, NJ/Wall) roped a double into left field and then promptly stole third to put himself just ninety feet away from scoring. Michael Parker (Newton, MA/Newton South) followed with a groundout to first that allowed Shupin to come home and give the Colonials a 1-0 lead.
With his swipe of third base in the first inning, his 28th of the season, Shupin became the all-time record holder at GW with 72 career stolen bases. He added his 73rd theft later in the game.
The Rams tied the score in their half of the first, as center fielder Dave Savard drew a lead-off walk and eventually came around to score on a wild pitch.
In the second, Rhode Island extended their lead, scoring three runs, two of which came on shortstop Dan Rhault's triple to right field. Rhody added another two runs in the fourth to make it 6-1 in their favor.
For the third straight day, Rhode Island pitching delivered a strong starting performance. Senior Adam Perkins limited the Colonials to just one run on one hit as he struck out five in six innings of work.
GW scraped together a run in the top of the sixth with timely hitting. Tim Reeves (Cumming, GA/North Forsyth) led off the inning with a pinch-hit double to the left-field fence. Two batters later, Whitey Wallace (Syracuse, NY/Phillips Exeter Academy) singled up the middle to score Reeves with the Colonials second run of the day.
For GW, it was the first time they have been swept in an A-10 series this season. Rhode Island outscored GW 17-3 in the three games as the Colonials recorded just 13 hits to the Rams' 26.
George Washington travels to Dayton next weekend for a three-game A-10 series with the Flyers, beginning Friday, at 2:30 p.m.
