Dayton Proves Too Much for GW in Series Opener

DAYTON, OH - Dayton (19-29, 8-14 A-10) recorded a five-run, two-out rally in the fifth inning as they cruised past George Washington (17-31-1, 9-13 A-10) Friday afternoon by a final of 13-4, at Time Warner Cable Stadium in the opening game of their three-game Atlantic 10 Conference series.
The win was just Dayton's second in their past 11 games. After winning five of six games against at Massachusetts and Saint Joseph's, GW has now dropped six of their past seven conference contests, and eight of their last nine overall.
The Colonials, tied for third in the A-10 with 34 home runs, jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the first inning by playing small ball. Mickey Shupin (Sea Girt, NJ/Wall) led-off with an infield single and then advanced to second on a passed ball. Tom Zebroski (Port Washington, NY/Paul Schreiber) then laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Shupin over to third base. Michael Parker (Newton, MA/Newton South) followed with a sacrifice of his own, a fly ball to right field that scored Shupin for his team-leading 55th RBI of the season.
In the bottom half of the first, Dayton responded, scoring two runs to take a 2-1 lead. Bobby Getty hit a sac-fly to drive in Michael Massa and Joe McSoley added an RBI-single down the left field line.
GW answered in the top of the second with another run to draw even at two. Doug Eizen (Philadelphia, PA/The Haverford School) got things started with a double into right field, just his second extra-base hit of the season. Three pitches later, Whitey Wallace (Syracuse, NY/Phillips Exeter Academy) laced an opposite-field single into right-center that allowed Eizen to score from second.
Michael Massa led-off for Dayton in the third with his team-best seventh triple of the year. A Getty single into left field plated Massa to give the Flyers a slim 3-2 lead.
Dayton extended their lead in the bottom of the fifth inning, as they scored five runs on five hits, all-coming with two outs. The Flyers sent nine batters to the plate and recorded three RBI-singles in the frame.
In the top of the sixth inning, GW scraped together two runs to begin their comeback attempt. Zebroski and Parker started the inning with consecutive singles to put runners on the corners with no outs. A balk by Dayton pitcher Chris Rubio forced home the Colonials third run of the day and put Parker at second. Charlie Kruer (Old Bridge, NJ/Old Bridge) moved Parker to third on his groundball that was misplayed by the second baseman. Chris Marsicano (Old Tappan, NJ/Bergen Catholic) followed with a pinch-hit, RBI-fielder's choice to second, making it 8-4 in favor of the Flyers.
For GW, however, that would be as close as they would come to challenging Dayton, as the Flyers exploded for another five runs, on three hits, in the seventh, sending 11 batters to bat.
George Washington and Dayton will continue their series on Saturday, at 1:00 p.m., as the Flyers will celebrate Senior Day.
Game Notes: Zebroski's two sacrifice hits gives him 15 on the year, the most on the team ... he entered today's game 16th in the country with 0.29 sacrifice hits per game ... GW is now 2-16 when trailing after the first inning and 3-24 when they are down after five innings of play ... the Colonials are now 1-15 when the opponent score 10 runs or more ... Mickey Shupin finished 3-for-5 ... Doug Eizen added two hits for the Colonials.
