GW Defeats Dayton in Ten Innings

DAYTON, OH - George Washington (18-31-1, 10-13 A-10) sent nine batters to the plate and scored four runs in the tenth inning as they defeated Dayton (19-30, 8-15 A-10) Saturday afternoon, 11-7, at Time Warner Cable Stadium in the second game of their three-game Atlantic 10 Conference series.
GW entered the ninth inning leading 7-5, but could not maintain that slim advantage, as Dayton forced across two runs in the frame, the second of which came with two outs, on a wild pitch.
In the tenth inning, however, GW put the game out of reach, as they scored four runs on three hits, capped by Tim Reeves' (Cumming, GA/North Forsyth) two-run single that came with two outs. Tom Zebroski (Port Washington, NY/Paul Schreiber) began the inning with a double into right field, just his second extra-base hit of the season.
Senior Derek Haese (Littleton, CO/Dakota Ridge) pitched the final 2 2/3 innings to earn his second win of the season (2-7). Haese allowed two runs on two hits and struck out one batter. The Colonials opened the game's scoring in a major way, scoring six runs on five hits in the top of the second inning as they sent 10 batters to the plate. Charlie Kruer (Old bridge, NJ/Old Bridge) led-off with an infield single and Curtis Eward (Oak Hill, VA/Oakton) singled into left field to get things started for GW. A walk issued to Chris Marsicano (Old Tappan, NJ/Bergen Catholic) loaded the bases for the Colonials with just one out.
Chris Holland (Pasadena, MD/Chesapeake), making just his fifth start of the season, followed with a single into center field that drove in both Kruer and Eward. The starting designated hitter, Andrew Haberern (Emmaus, PA/Emmaus), was up next and he promptly delivered with a single down the left field line to plate Marsicano. Leadoff hitter Mickey Shupin (Sea Girt, NJ/Wall) then reached safely on a bunt and advanced all the way to third base on a throwing error by Dayton's Jeff Mercer. The bunt-single, coupled with the fielding gaffe, allowed both Holland and Haberern to touch home. Shupin came around to score the sixth and final run of the frame when Tom Zebroski reached safely on a bunt of his own.
Dayton began to chip away at the 6-0 GW advantage with two runs in the third and one each in the fifth, six and eighth innings, before they put a two-spot on the board in the ninth to tie the game at seven.
The Colonials added a run in the eighth when Michael Parker (Newton, MA/Newton South) scored on a throw down to first after a strike out. Parker had doubled to leadoff the inning, his team-leading 20th double of the season. With five regular season games remaining, Parker needs three more doubles to GW's season record.
George Washington and Dayton will play the rubber-game of their three game conference series on Sunday, at 12:00 p.m.
Game Notes: GW is now 4-5-1 in extra innings this season ... Curtis Eward and Chris Holland both had two hits ... for Holland, it was the first two-hit game of his career, and his first two-RBI game ... the Colonials are now 8-0 when they score 10 or more runs and 15-1 when leading after eight innings.
