WASHINGTON, DC (AP) - Ranked in the AP top 10 for just the second time, George Washington showed why it deserves that lofty status.
Junior Sarah-Jo Lawrence and senior Kenan Cole had 15 points and sophomore Jessica Adair and junior Kimberly Beck added 11 each to lead the eighth-ranked Colonials to a 75-41 victory over St. Bonaventure on Sunday.
George Washington (21-2, 10-0 Atlantic 10) raced out to a 25-2 lead and beat the Bonnies for the 26th straight time. The Colonials won their 14th straight and held St. Bonaventure (13-12, 3-7) to 23.1 percent from the field.
For Colonials coach Joe McKeown, the aim was a simple one: "Setting the tone with our size and our quickness. That was our goal."
George Washington scored the game's first 13 points, and took a 25-2 lead when Cole converted a three-point play with 13:34 left in the first half. Even after holding the Colonials scoreless for the next 4 1/2 minutes, the Bonnies could cut the lead to only 25-8.
"Our defense sparks our offense. (We) make them take shots they don't want to take. We love to run. That helped us in the beginning," Lawrence said.
George Washington shot 41.2 percent (7-for-17) from the three-point line, but four of them came in the game's first 5 minutes.
"We're not one of the top three-point shooting teams in the country, but we're dangerous, and we go in spurts. I'm hoping we get better at that," McKeown said.
After taking a 44-17 lead at halftime, Adair began the second half with two jumpers and Lawrence had three field goals as George Washington took a 54-19 lead with 16:06 remaining. Once the Colonials' lead reached 40 points, 71-29 with 11:12 to play, McKeown began substituting liberally.
George Washington scored just four points once McKeown emptied his bench, but St. Bonaventure could only score 12 points of its own.
"We got a little sloppy," Cole said. "We can definitely clean it up."
The Colonials, who have lost only to No. 3 Tennessee and No. 6 Maryland this season, have four more regular season games left.
It was the fewest points George Washington allowed this season, and the most lopsided defeat of the season for St. Bonaventure, which was led by Katelyn Murray's 10 points.
"Their ranking is well-deserved," St. Bonaventure coach Jim Crowley said.
GW takes to the road for its next two games, at Charlotte on Thursday and Saint Louis on Sunday. The Colonials have never played at either school.
Notes: GW scored at least 30 points off turnovers for the second straight game (38 vs. Duquesne, 30 vs. St. Bonaventure) ... With three steals, junior Kimberly Beck tied Wanda Lanham for 12th place all-time at GW with 200 career thefts ... With LSU's home loss to Connecticut, GW's 12 straight home wins is now the 12th longest streak in the nation, and ties the fifth longest streak in school history.
