WASHINGTON, DC - Junior Antelia Parrish led all scorers with 18 points and added 11 rebounds, seven assists and three steals in her first Division I basketball experience to lead the 13th-ranked George Washington women's basketball team to a 95-68 exhibition demolition of DT3 at Charles E. Smith Athletic Center Friday night.
Parrish, who was a junior college All-American at Prince George's Community College two seasons ago, paced four Colonials in double-figures and was the only player to secure double-digit rebounds in the contest. Seniors Whitney Allen and Kimberly Beck chipped in 13 points apiece, followed by 12 from junior Jessica Adair. Allen added eight boards and game-high eight assists, while Beck had six assists and four steals.
Parrish opened with a lay-up and senior Sarah-Jo Lawrence scored seven of her eight points on the night as GW pushed to a 16-5 lead 5:48 into the contest. DT3 managed to slice and keep the lead to less than 10 points deep into the first half, but the Colonials put together a 25-8 run, fueled by 15 points from Parrish and Jessica Adair, to close the half ahead 54-35. GW, which shot 56 percent (38-of-68) on the evening and 58 percent (23-of-40) in the first half, limited DT3 to 10 field goals and 39 percent shooting in the opening period.
DT3 managed to pull within 15 points, 60-45, on a three-pointer from former Austin Peay star Alicia Watson at the 16:30 mark of the second half, but that is as close as it would get. GW rebuilt its 20-point cushion behind solid shooting in the paint and from the perimeter, as well as in transition. Beck's full-court steal-and-finish gave the Colonials a 25-point advantage, 79-54, with 8:29 to play and DT3 would get only as close as 19 the rest of the way.
Sophomore Stefani Munro and freshman Erica Rivera both came off the bench to score eight points. All 11 players who saw action for the Colonials scored.
GW controlled the paint, outscoring DT3 52-18 in the lane. The Colonials also had 38 bench points, 31 points off turnovers and led 16-2 in second-chance points.
DT3 placed five players in double-figures, led by 13 points from both Kendra Wecker (Kansas State) and Watson.
The Colonials, who are ranked No. 13 in the preseason ESPN/USA Today Top 25 Coaches' poll, visit Maryland-Baltimore County in their home opener Friday, Nov. 9. Tip-off is slated for 7:30 pm.
