BETHESDA, MD - In his first career start, junior RHP Derek Haese (4-2) threw six shutout innings and the Colonials grabbed a 5-0 lead after two innings in George Washington University's (14-23) 8-3 victory over Georgetown University (17-21) Wednesday night at Shirley Povich Field.
Left fielder Charlie Kruer (Old Bridge, NY / Old Bridge) wrapped an RBI double and would come around to score on an error to give GW a 2-0 first inning lead.
The Colonials made to 5-0 an inning later when back-to-back RBI singles from shortstop Michael Parker (Newton, MA / Newton South) and Kruer capped the three-run frame.
Kruer went 2-for-5 in the contest and knocked in two runs for the second straight day.
Parker went 3-for-5 with two runs scored and an RBI.
GW freshman Pat Lehman (Fairlawn, NJ / Fairlawn), a two-way player who started and earned the win on Tuesday, was Wednesday's designated hitter and collected two hits in the game.
Haese dealt with early control problems, walking four batters in the first two inning and administering six free passes overall, before settling down and recording four strikeouts in the effort. His start comes after 15 consecutive relief appearances this season and 32 in his career.
Hoyas' freshman RHP Ben McKean (0-1) also made his first career start in the game, allowing three hits and four earned runs in 4.0 innings as he took the loss.
Georgetown came as close as 7-3 in the seventh inning when second baseman Matthew Maranges' solo home run (2) highlighted a three-run inning.
GW's win improves its overall record to 85-26-1 against its crosstown rival. The Hoyas get another chance against GW as the two teams meet again next Wednesday, April 26, at Barcroft Park.
GW opens a three-game Atlantic 10 Conference series this weekend as it travels to Ambler, PA, to face Temple University (7-28, 1-11 A-10).
The Owls are in the midst of a nine-game slide and have dropped 15 of their last 16 games.
Game one of the series is set for Friday at 3:00 pm.
