FAIRFAX, VA - George Mason University (7-7) shortstop Brent Weiss, its number nine hitter, went 3-for-4 with three doubles and three RBI, including a two-run game breaking sixth inning two-bagger, to lift the Patriots over George Washington University (4-7) Wednesday afternoon at Spuhler Field.
The Colonials took a 3-2 lead in the top of the sixth inning, but Mason scored four times in the bottom half to take a 6-3 lead.
After getting the first two batters of the inning on base, a sacrifice bunt attempt was thrown wild and scored a run while advancing the base runners to second and third with no outs. Weiss followed with a double that produced two more runs and gave the Patriots a 5-3 advantage. After a double steal put runners back on second and third base, a wild pitch pushed across another run to give Mason a 7-3 lead.
GW RHP Brian Frazier (0-2) started and was solid through five innings but struggled in the sixth and was lifted after facing the inning's first five batters without recording an out. Frazier was charged with five earned runs in 5.0 innings and suffered the loss.
Mason starter LHP Jared Petrovich allowed two runs and struck out four in 4.1 innings. Reliever RHP Dan Jaycox (1-0) came on in the fifth and struck out five while giving up one hit and allowing one run in 2.2 innings to earn the win.
The Colonials took a 1-0 first inning lead after shortstop Michael Parker (Newton, MA / Newton South) opened the game with a double and came around to score on a sacrifice pop foul from catcher Andrew Abokhair (Ashburn, VA / Broad Run).
After the first two batters were retired in the third inning, the Patriots loaded the bases and scored two runs on catcher Jason Bour's single to give Mason a 2-1 lead.
GW tied the game 2-2 in the fifth inning on an RBI single from left fielder Charlie Kruer (Old Bridge, NJ / Old Bridge) and took its 3-2 advantage an inning later on an RBI base hit off the bat of first baseman Tim Reeves (Cumming, GA / North Forsyth).
Parker became the first Colonial to record three hits in a game this season as he went 3-for-5 with a double and a run scored.
In their first starts of the year, GW freshmen Bryan Hwang (Northvale, NJ / Northvale) and Matt Boyd (Rockville, MD / Magruder) both picked up their first collegiate hit in Wednesday's game.
The loss ended GW's four game winning streak against Mason.
The Liberty Flames come to the D.C. area this weekend to meet the Colonials for the first time since 1991.
The first of the three game series is scheduled for Friday at 2:30 pm. GW will send LHP Dan Pfau (1-1, 5.11 ERA) to the hill.
