Colonials Go Down Hard Against Winthrop, 16-0

ROCK HILL, SC - The Winthrop Eagles (18-5) scored four runs in the third inning and five runs in the fourth to open a 10-0 lead and cruise to a 16-0 victory over George Washington University (5-13) Sunday afternoon in the third and final day of the Coca-Cola Classic at the Winthrop Ball Park.
Eagles' starter and designated hitter RHP Heath Rollins (3-3) held the Colonials to one hit in 5.2 innings to earn the win.
GW freshman RHP Pat Lehman (0-1) struggled in his first career start, getting stung for five runs, two earned, on six hits in 3.0 innings as he took the loss.
Freshman Jim Duggan (Jefferson, MD / St. John's Prospect Hall) pitched 3.2 innings of effective relief for GW, holding the Eagles scoreless and hitless while picking up five strikeouts.
The Winthrop offense pounded Colonial pitching for 16 runs on 13 hits and 12 walks to hand GW its largest margin of defeat since February 2004.
Four different players collected two or more hits for the Eagles including third baseman Mitch Saum who went 3-for-4 with a double and four RBI and right fielder Phil Carey who went 2-for-2 with a homer (2) and four RBI.
The Colonials produced just two hits in the game with one coming off the bat of third baseman Tom Shanley (Stanfordville, NY / Pine Plains), who returned to the lineup after missing three games with an injury.
GW looks to turn things around on Tuesday when they travel to Dover, DE, to face Delaware State University. Game time is 2:30 pm.
