Volleyball Neutralizes Fordham, 3-1

WASHINGTON, DC -- The GW volleyball team scored a program-high 40 points in game one of a three-game sweep of Fordham in an Atlantic 10 Conference match Friday evening at The Field School. The match was played at the local high school due to a scheduling conflict at Charles E. Smith Athletic Center. The Colonials overcame the neutral ambiance of the venue and won by the scores 30-26, 30-24, 20-30, 31-29 in one hour, 50 minutes.
GW freshman Abby Syverson led the Colonials with 18.5 points on 12 kills, five service aces and three block assists while hitting .579. The Minneapolis native commited just one attack error in 19 swings. Senior setter Kaimana Lee entered the match just 16 assists shy of 3,000 career assists and reach the milestone midway through game two. She ranks fifth on GW's career assists list with 3,026. Lee assisted on 42 of GW's 51 kills and added 18 digs.
Colonials senior Juliene McLaughlin contributed 16.5 points on 13 kills, a pair of aces and two blocks as well as 13 digs for her team-leading 10th double-double of the season. Abba Greenleaf led the team with 19 digs and had 8.5 points. GW junior Janine Brown (12 kills) was the only other Colonial with double-figure kills. Senior Kelly Kabbes hit an errorless .467 with seven kills in 15 swings.
Fordham (14-13, 1-6 A-10) was led by Jamee Stimson and Tasha Johnston with 14 kills each. Stimson and Marija Markovic combined for 12 block assists as the Rams totalled 16 blocks (five solo, 22 assists).
Game one was played very tight with neither team leading by more than a point until GW went on a 9-2 run to take a 19-12 lead. The Colonials enjoyed a 28-23 lead but the Rams scored three of the next four points to get within 29-26 before losing on an attack error.
Game two featured four lead changes and five ties, including the last tie at 21-21 before the Colonials slowly pulled away for the 30-24 victory.
Following the 10-minute intermission, Fordham came out strong and built a 15-6 lead and was never threatened en route to the 30-20 victory.
Game four was a tense affair that featured seven lead changes and 13 ties including a late 29-29 deadlock. GW's Greenleaf broke the tie with a kill followed by another kill from Brown to end the match.
GW (10-10, 3-5 A-10) next hosts Rhode Island in an Atlantic 10 Conference match Sunday beginning at 2:00 p.m. at Charles E. Smith Athletic Center.
