Volleyball Runs Down Rhode Island, 3-1

WASHINGTON, DC -- GW freshman Abby Syverson played perhaps her best college match and scored 20.5 points to lead GW past visiting Rhode Island, 3-1, in an Atlantic 10 Conference match Sunday afternoon at GW's Charles E. Smith Athletic Center. The Colonials defeated the Rams by the scores: 24-30, 30-28, 30-19, 30-12 in one hour, 54 minutes.
The triumph was the Colonials' third straight A-10 Conference victory and the third straight over the Rams dating back to the 2004 season. GW improved to 11-10 overall, 4-5 in the A-10 while URI dropped to 6-19 overall, 2-6 in the A-10.
GW combined to hit .287 for the match led by senior Kelly Kabbes who hit .476 on 11 kills in 21 attacks with just one error. Syverson served a career-high seven aces, one shy of the school record for a four-game match, as GW had 13 aces to just seven service errors on the day.
Junior Janine Brown tallied 14.5 points on a team-high 13 kills, an ace and a block assist. Senior Juliene McLaughlin added 13 points on 12 kills an ace and added 18 digs for her 11th double-double of the season. Setter Kaimana Lee assisted on 42 of GW's 61 kills.
Rhode Island's Inga Schlecht led the Rams with 13 points on 11 kills, an ace and a pair of block assists. A trio of Rams had 10 kills each, Jillian Bekke, Rachel Bello and Caitlyn Welsh. Leslie Wiekamp added a team-high 21 digs.
For the match, GW out-hit URI .287 (61-18-150) to .168 (55-29-155). The Colonials also had a 13-7 advantage over the Rams in service aces.
GW came out of the gate strong and took a 5-1 lead before URI battled back to tie the game at 10-10 on a GW attack error. The Colonials maintained small one- to three-point leads until URI eventually tied the game again at 23-23 on a kill by Bekke. The Rams then took control of the game and outscored GW, 7-2, to close out game one.
Game two was the most competitive of the match featuring 14 ties and seven lead changes before the Colonials broke a 28-28 tie on a kill by Brown and then won the game on a Ram attack error.
Game three was all GW as the Colonials rushed out to a 10-3 lead and were never threatened en route to the 30-19 victory. Game four was even more lopsided as the Rams, after taking an early 2-0 lead, ran out of steam while GW went on a 25-7 run for a commanding 25-9 lead.
GW (11-10, 4-5 A-10) next travels to Maryland-Eastern Shore Friday for a 6:00 p.m. non-conference match before returning home to host Charlotte Nov. 2 at 7:00 p.m.
