WASHINGTON, DC - George Washington (3-3) evened their season record with a 77-55 victory over Stony Brook (4-3) at Charles E. Smith Athletic Center in their most dominant victory of the season. The Colonials took a, 39-17, halftime lead but were matched with 38 points in the second half. Colonials' captain Jessica Simmonds recorded her second double-double of the year and seventh of her career finishing with a season-best 14 points with 13 rebounds as GW scored a season-high 77 points.
GW went into the locker room with a 22-halftime margin, their largest of the season. They led by as many as 27 points in the second half. The Colonials shot 45 percent from the field compared to SBU's 30 percent after shooting only 19 percent in the first half. GW dominated the boards with a 51-35 advantage leading to a 20-9 difference in second chance points and a 38-18 margin on points in the paint.
GW's 39 first half points was the most the team had scored in a half since they posted 40 in the second half of their A-10 Championship loss to #16 Temple last season. SBU defeated Temple in their last game, 58-56, to defeat their first-ever Top-25 opponent.
The Colonials opened the game by controlling the opening tip and going on a 9-0 run and holding a 13-1 edge before the first media timeout. GW's Simmonds scored first on an offensive rebound and put-back. The senior captain had six rebounds in the game's opening seven minutes and ended the half just two rebounds and two points shy of a double-double. She completed it just five minutes into the second half.
Starting center freshman Chantelle John completed a three-point play to put GW ahead 9-0 when she was fouled under the basket on her way to the hoop. John's subsequent free throw continued her perfect performance from the line (5-5) this season. GW then put together a 12-0 run towards the end of the first half while keeping the Seawolves from scoring for more than seven minutes. Stony Brook's guard Sidney Orendorff single-handedly kept it competitive with seven straight points in the game to make it 35-17 with two minutes left in the half.
The Colonials got a season-high from Kenan Cole who had six points in the first five minutes en route to an 11-point day. Kimberly Beck had 10 points along with six assists, while Whitney Allen contributed 11 rebounds. The game's leading scorer was the Seawolves Sidney Orndorff who had 15 before fouling out. Mykeema Ford had 14 and Jessica Smith added 12.
Jessica Adair played in her first collegiate game and scored her first basket on a turnaround jump-shot with 1:44 left in the first half. Also scoring for the Colonials for the first time where freshmen Jamila Bates and Faith Peters both of whom finished with eight points. Amy Kern played in her first collegiate game and Lora Mitchell saw action in her second-straight game.
After getting their first win of the season at home, the Colonials continue their five-game homestand with SMU on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. GW has the third toughest schedule in the country followed by SMU who is fourth. The Mustangs have won both previous meetings but they have not played GW since 1999.
