FREEPORT, Bahamas (AP) - Jessica Simmonds' free throw, with 9.4 seconds left, lifted George Washington to a 49-47 victory over No. 19 Purdue in the Junkanoo Jam on Friday.
The game was back and forth in the final eight minutes, with five ties. It was 47-all when Simmonds stepped to the line. After missing the first attempt, Simmonds made the second to put George Washington (1-1) in front.
On the next trip downcourt for Purdue (1-1), Katie Gearlds tried to drive the lane but was called for charging into Whitney Allen. After an inbound to Lisa Steele, she was fouled making one of two shots from the foul line with less than a second left. Lawless' desperation 3-point attempt bounced off the front of the rim.
Sarah-Jo Lawrence and Jazmine Adair led George Washington with 12 points apiece. Adair, playing in her first-ever college game, averaged a point per minute and also contributed three steals and two rebounds in 12 minutes. She went to the foul line for nine attempts, making a game-high six free throws. Simmonds and Chantelle John had 10 points each.
Aya Traore led Purdue with 15 points and seven rebounds. But the Boilermakers had problems shooting throughout the game. They made only one of 12 3-pointers and finished at just over 30 percent (17-for-56) for the game from the field.
George Washington will take on No. 18 Texas (2-1) at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday in the Junkanoo Jam Championship. Texas defeated South Carolina (2-1), 59-55 in a hard-fought game at 3:30 p.m. in the other half of the Lucaya Division. The Colonials won their only other previous meeting with the Longhorns, 70-62, when the two locked horns on November 29, 1991.
After picking up their first loss, the Gamecocks will face the Boilermakers on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. in the consolation game.
