Volleyball Falls to Duquesne, 3-1

WASHINGTON, DC -- The GW volleyball team lost to Duquesne, 3-1, in an Atlantic 10 Conference match Sunday afternoon at Charles E. Smith Athletic Center. The Dukes won by the scores, 30-27, 30-27, 25-30, 30-23 in a one-hour, 54-minute affair.
The loss dropped the Colonials' record to 7-12, 1-5 in the A-10 while Duquesne improved to 11-7, 3-2 A-10.
Game one was competitive and tied at 17-17 before the Dukes got a pair of kills from Lindsay Hess and an attack error by GW to go up 20-17. Duquesne appeared to be cruising at 27-19 but four kills by GW senior Lindsey Vernand and a pair from Juliene McLaughlin got the Colonials within two at 29-27 before DU's Dana McLaughlin registered a kill for the game-winner.
Duquesne controlled game two early and out-hit the Colonials, .341 to .154 before more late-game heroics got the Colonials to within 29-26 when a GW attack error gave the deceision to the Dukes.
Game three also was very competitive and tied at 21-21 before three kills by Kelly Kabbes gave the Colonials the lead for good. Kabbes hit .579 for the match with 12 kills and just one error in 19 swings. Duquesne took control early in game four and kept GW at arm's length for most of the game en route to the victory.
GW's McLaughlin led all players with 18 kills and added 17 digs for her the sixth double-double of the season. GW sophomore Erica Williams had her most productive day as a Colonial with a career-high four kills in five attacks with no errors for an .800 hitting percentage. Junior Kaimana Lee registered her season-high 63 assists, one shy of her career best.
For the match, DU hit .288 with 63 kills while GW managed 76 kills en route to a .205 hitting percentage. Attack errors doomed GW as they gave away 37 points on misfires while Duquesne had just 14 attack errors. Despite the loss, GW still holds a 26-7 advantage in the all-time series with the Dukes.
Duquesne's Amanda Haeg led the Dukes with a 16-kill, 16-dig double-double and hit .347 while teammates Dana McLaughlin and Diana Wuebker added 14 kills each. Kristin Garnett set up 56 of Duquesne's 60 kills on the afternoon and added 14 digs.
GW (7-12, 1-5 A-10) next travels to Rhode Island Friday for a 7:00 p.m. match followed by a Sunday match at Fordham in the Bronx. URI's Keaney Gym is the site of this year's Atlantic 10 Championship tournament Nov. 18-19.
