
Volleyball Blocked by Saint Louis, 3-1

WASHINGTON, DC -- In the first meeting between GW and Saint Louis on the volleyball court, it was the Billikens who came out on top, 3-1 over the Colonials in an Atlantic 10 Conference match Friday night at Charles E. Smith Athletic Center. SLU won by the scores 30-19, 25-30, 30-22, 30-30, in a one-hour, 54-minute affair.
The loss dropped the Colonials' record to 7-11, 1-4 in the A-10 while Saint Louis improved to 8-10, 2-2 A-10.
After the Billikens took control in game one, GW came out strong in game two and hit .390 with 19 kills and just three errors to take a 30-25 victory. The Billikens came back to win game three before routing the Colonials in game four, 30-20. The Billikens hit .414 in the third game and .378 in game four compared to .132 and .143 for GW.
For the match, SLU out-hit GW .342 (69-19-146) to .190 (56-27-153) but it was Saint Louis' blocking that kept the Billikens in control throughout. SLU combined for 15 total blocks to seven for the Colonials.
GW junior Juliene McLaughlin led the Colonials with 12 kills and 15 digs for her fifth double-double of the season while senior Abigail Hatter hit. 471 with 10 kills and 17 attacks with just two errors.
Senior Lindsay Vernand added 10 kills and three blocks while sophomore Janine Brown added 13 digs.
Saint Louis' Tatyana Menshikova and Angela Powers led the Billikens with 19 kills each while teammate Aida Antanaviciute led all players with 17 digs.
GW (8-10, 2-3 A-10) next hosts Duquesne in a noon match on Sunday at Smith Center. Duquesne swept the season series last year but GW still holds a 26-6 advantage in the all-time series with the Dukes.
