WASHINGTON, DC - George Washington University head baseball coach Steve Mrowka announced Monday the signings of Justin Dignelli (Katonah, NY) and Bryan Hwang (Northvale, NJ) to national letters-of-intent for the 2006 season. The signings are the first two recruits landed by Mrowka since the University hired him last August.
Dignelli is a 6-foot-3, 200 pound right-handed pitcher with a fastball topping out at 88-mph. This season will be his fourth on The Hackley High School varsity team, coached by Steve Frolo, where he posted back-to-back shutouts to begin last season. Dignelli is a captain of both the baseball and basketball teams at Hackley.
Dignelli also pitches for the Bayside Yankees, a premier showcase team in Bayside, NY, where he was teammates with current GW freshman Keith Fier last season. Dignelli helped lead the Bayside Yankees, coached by Marc Cuseta, to the semifinals of the 80-team World Wood Bat Championships in 2004. He also has pitched in the prestigious Empire State Games.
"Justin has all of the traits we look for in a recruit - experience, size, tenacity and potential," Mrowka said. "We are very excited to see him have a great career at GW".
Hwang is a 5-foot-9 175 pound infielder who combines very strong skills in hitting, fielding and base running.
Hwang is a senior at Northvale Regional High School where he plays baseball for head coach Tim Byron.
Hwang is a top player on the New Jersey Twins, a premier showcase team in New Jersey coached by Jon Wilson. He helped lead the club last season to the semifinals of the 80-team World Wood Bat Championships.
"Bryan is a very good all-around player," Mrowka said. "We are extremely pleased to have him part of GW's future."
The Colonials' season begins Feb. 16 when they open a three-game series at Norfolk State (VA). GW hosts Coppin State March 1 in its home opener.
