Dan Pfau Earns A-10 Rookie of the Week Award

WASHINGTON, DC - George Washington freshman and southpaw pitcher Dan Pfau (Flemington, NJ/Hunterdon Central) has been named the Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week, the conference announced on Monday, May 12th. Pfau helped the Colonials earn the final A-10 playoff spot with a win and a save during the week. He pitched his first collegiate complete game and improved to 5-0 this season while notching his first save.
The freshman had an excellent week both as a starter and a closer. The Colonials' lefty pitched a critical complete game victory over Temple on Wednesday and then ended the week with a save in GW's last regular season game against Dayton. This was Pfau's first save opportunity and he closed out the one-run game without giving up a hit, to pitch a scoreless ninth inning after an eight-run comback by the Colonials on Senior Day.
Pfau's 5-1 complete game against Temple was even more critical in GW securing the final playoff berth. Pfau allowed only one run on eight hits and one walk while striking out six. He improved his recorded to 5-0 on the year while striking out 46 batters in 52 innings. He has started seven of his 18 appearances this season and will be a critical component for the Colonials in the postseason.
Pfau becomes the seventh Rookie of the Week as GW won more than half of this year's rookie awards. The Colonials have won a conference-best 12 A-10 awards in 13 weeks. The next best team is No. 14 Richmond who has won 11 A-10 awards. Both teams qualified for the conference tournament but would not meet until the last round. The conference rivals could meet in a rematch of last year's A-10 Championship Series in Richmond for an automatic berth in the NCAA Tournament. GW is the defending champion and captured the sixth seed in the conference tournament winning five of their last six conference games this year.
Joining Pfau as previous A-10 Rookie of the Week award winners are: outfielder Matt Owens (Fayetteville, GA/ Fayette County), pitcher Josh Wilkie (Alpharetta, GA/ Chattahoochee) and four-time honoree, shortstop Tom Shanley (Stanfordville, NY/Pine Plains).
