WASHINGTON, DC - Josh Wilkie (Alpharetta, GA/Chattahoochee) has been named the Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week, the conference announced on Monday, March 31st. Wilkie (2-0) who pitched eight impressive innings against Delaware State has emerged as one of the Colonials strongest pitchers and leads GW with a 2.15 ERA this year.
In his third start of the year, Wilkie yielded only three hits and one unearned run over eight outstanding innings. He struck out 10 of the 27 batters he faced and walked none. He pitched eight complete innings and left with a 2-1 lead before the Colonials lost their second game of the week on a ninth inning home run.
Wilkie's 2.15 ERA is a full point lower than any other Colonials pitcher and he has been effective as a starter and out of the bull pen. He has two wins against no losses and has started three of his eight appearances this season. In his 29 1/3 innings of work, Wilkie has struck out 33 batters and given up only 27 hits. He is second on the team in strikeouts and his 1.125 strikouts per inning is the best among pitchers with more than five innings pitched.
This is Wilkie's first Atlantic 10 honor of the year. Fellow GW freshman Tom Shanley (Stanfordville, NY/Pine Plains) has been named Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week three times. The Colonials lead the Atlantic 10 with eight conference honors thus far in the 2003 season.
