Senior Kim Warner graduates this December as one the most prolific scorers in GW women's soccer history. Last year's Atlantic 10 Offensive Player of the Year finished her collegiate career third on the Colonials all-time goals and points lists.
1. Describe the most memorable goal of your career.
KW: For me, the most memorable goal of my career was when my teammate Kelly Lawten scored versus Maryland this year. It was her first career goal and it came against a ranked opponent, lifting the team up and helping us tie a top 25 team. It can't get much better than that!
2. What advice do you have for athletes trying to come back from an injury?
KW: Rehab, Rehab, Rehab!
3. When you started at GW, did you think you'd leave as one of the program's best players ever?
KW: Not at all, I hoped that I would come in and make a contribution to the team, but finishing as one of the top players in GW history is great.
4. Your mother travels a long way from Ontario to see you play. Are you more nervous playing in front of her?
KW: No, it actually gets me to play a little harder knowing that she has come all this way and how much she loves to watch me play.
5. Who do you think will emerge as the leader for the Colonials next year?
KW: The senior class of next year, consisting of Lindsey Bruno and Kelly Lawten, has so much experience which can help take the team to the Atlantic 10 Championship next year. Their knowledge and love for the game give the team a powerful foundation on the defensive line and their innate leadership qualities will shine.
6. Do you feel more at home in Canada or the U.S.?
KW: Definitely Canada! All my friends are here, but my family is in Canada.
7. Do you think that the WUSA will make a comeback?
KW: I think so. The sport is too popular among young girls for it to fold completely. There were many mistakes made during the first three years of the WUSA. Hopefully they have gone to the drawing board with those in mind and can create a better league for women. It would be a waste to see the league go down.
8. What is the key to your success on the soccer field?
KW: Knowledge of the game. I'm definitely not the most technical player on the team nor the most talented, but knowing the game of soccer is so important. I don't know everything, but I know enough to keep me one step ahead most of the time.
9. Who would win in a one-on-one basketball game between you and teammate Kelly Lawten?
KW: Right now, I would win. But when the girl is healthy, she's a tough one on the basketball court. She can move like Shaq in the paint, and shoot like Kobe on the outside.
10. If you could assist any international player on the game-winning goal to win the world cup championship, who would it be?
KW: Well, the assist would probably go to Marta from Brazil. I love to watch the Brazilians play because of their passion for the game. They look like they have so much fun playing "the beautiful game."
