WASHINGTON, DC - The George Washington University baseball team has signed four more student-athletes to national letters-of-intent for the 2003 season, head baseball coach Tom Walter has announced. The Colonials will welcome eight new recruits to their team this fall, having previously signed four players during the early signing period.
"We are extremely happy with the players coming into our program next season. We feel these are the players that will take us to a higher level." Walter said. The four most recent signees are:
Jay Quinn, C, 6-0, 190, New York, NY/Bronx High School of Science
"We have been fortunate to find a catcher of Jay's ability this late in the recruiting season. He is a catch-and- throw type of guy with good athleticism. He is a good runner and will hit for average at our level. He will be a huge addition for us behind the plate," Walter said.
Steven Santy, OF, 6-3, 175, Gilford, NH/Laconia H.S.
"Steven brings a tremendous amount of potential to our outfield. He is extremely athletic and should vie for a starting position in our program the day he steps on campus. He shows a great deal of 'pop' in his bat and tremendous speed on the base paths," Walter said.
Sam Schaffer, LHP, 6-0, 175, Glastonbury, CT/Glastonbury H.S.
"Sam is a welcomed addition to our pitching staff. He brings an outstanding work ethic, desire, and good mental make up. He has a great desire to succeed at our level. Currently, he pitches in the low to mid-80s with sink. He shows a good feel for a change up and the makings of a cutter," Walter said.
Anthony (Mickey) Shupin, UT, 6-0, 175, Sea Girt, NJ/Wall Township H.S.
"Mickey will be an outstanding offensive threat when he starts to play the game on an everyday basis. He is a great player to have in our program because he can do so many things on the field. He will be used in a wide variety of positions, allowing us to take advantage of his speed (6.5) and instincts. We are looking forward to working with Anthony," Walter said.
The Colonials posted a school-record 42 victories and won the Atlantic 10 Tournament Championship to earn a berth in the 2002 NCAA Tournament. In addition, GW had six players drafted by four National League teams in last week's Major League Baseball free agent draft.
