WASHINGTON, DC - George Washington freshman Nick Koken (Basking Ridge, NJ/Immaculata) has been named the Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week the conference office has announced. This is his first A-10 honor of the season.
Koken made his first collegiate start on May 2 in the first game of a doubleheader against the visiting Mount St. Mary's Mountaineers. In impressive fashion he twirled a seven-inning no-hitter, leading the Colonials to a 17-0 win with only five appearances in relief for a total of five innings under his belt. Koken allowed just one baserunner who advanced to first in the fourth inning on a hit by pitch. The batter was soon erased on a double play two batters later. Koken struck out six and now has 11 stikeouts on the season.
Koken's no-hitter was the Colonials' first in eight years. The last GW no-hitter was pitched by Koken's pitching coach Dennis Healy on May 8, 1994 to lead the Colonials to a 3-0 victory over Duquesne University.
Koken has a 2.25 ERA and has allowed only three runs on six hits in 12 innings, while appearing in six games. He has a win-loss record of 1-0.
Koken and the Colonials next host Towson University at Barcroft Park this afternoon, Tuesday, May 7, at 4:00 p.m.
