Colonials Fall to Hokies, 68-52

BLACKSBURG, VA (March 16, 2002) - The Colonials season came to an end versus the Virginia Tech as George Washington couldn't overcome a tough second-half defensive stand by Hokies falling 68-52, in the second round of the Women's National Invitation Tournament.
The Colonials (21-9) led for much of the first half, as they torched the nets to the tune of a 63.2% (12-19), and held the Hokies to 29.6% (8-27) from the floor. VT kept it close from the charity stripe, as GW was whistled for 14 fouls to the Hokies' four for the half. GW built their lead up to 12 points, 30-18, with 5:47 left in the half, but a 9-2 run by VT to close out the period cut their lead to five points at the break.
Freshman Greeba Outen Barlow keyed the attack in the first half, scoring a game-high 17 points on 7-8 shooting, including going 3-3 from beyond the arc.
In what would turn out to be a tale of two halves, the Colonials came out of the locker room as cold from the floor as they were hot in the first half. GW went 7-26 (.269) as VT turned up the heat on defense, and started to convert on offense.
The Hokies would use a 13-6 run over the first six minutes to tie the game at 40-40, with 13:55 left in the game. The Colonials were held to only three field goals over VT's run, and could not get into sync on offense.
The Hokies took the lead for good, and put the Colonials away with a 12-3 run for a nine-point lead, 52-43. GW wouldn't recover, and the Hokies outscored the Colonials 16-9 to close out the game.
Outen Barlow led the Colonials with 18 points with junior Cathy Joens adding 12 points in the losing effort.
