WASHINGTON, DC - With the 2002-03 NCAA golf season at it's mid-point, GW's freshman class is currently ranked #21 in the country by "Golfstat," the statistical service for the NCAA. The Colonials have been ranked as high as No. 12 and have remained in the ranking throughout the entire fall season.
The Golfstat ranking ranks all NCAA Division I teams. It considers the players' finishes in tournaments, scoring average and the impact the freshman have had on their respective teams. Since the rankings began in 1995, GW has never had a team ranked, for even one week. GW is the only Atlantic 10 Conference school ranked and are one of two Mid-Atlantic Region schools ranked (James Madison is the other currently at No. 16).
GW coach Scott Allen has started as least three freshmen (in a five-man starting line-up) in all but one of GW's events. Four freshmen were in the line-up when the Colonials won the Lehigh-Don Mershon Classic. Freshman Brian Carroll (Crystal Lake, IL) won that event with a 70-77 total and averaged 74.40 in the fall. The previous week, freshman Andrew Gallo (Thornhill, Ontario) won the Temple Invitational in a three-way playoff, shooting 70-74. Gallo averaged 74.92 and led the team in rounds played with 12. Freshman Federico Guzman (Bogota, Colombia) played in all but one event for GW and averaged 76.09 highlighted by a 13th-place finish at the Rohoboth Beach Invitational. Freshman Dan Mirabella (Ann Arbor, MI) was on the tournament-winning team at Lehigh and averaged 77.25 with a 16th-place finish in Rehoboth and a 17th-place finish at Lehigh. Finally, Lee Hodder (Cumbria, England) played in two tournaments for GW and fired a rain-soaked 75 in the final round of the Old Dominion/Sea Scape Invitational. Hodder's 75 was the third-lowest score of the day, before play was called because of harsh conditions with five groups still on the golf course.
Seniors Brad Friedlander (Baltimore, MD), Mike Ball (Potomac, MD) and Reid Rosenthal (W. Caldwell, NJ), junior Charles Taylor (St. Lambert, Quebec) and sophomore Ameet Patil (Cleveland, OH) also have seen action this fall on a deep Colonials team. Friedlander, Taylor and Ball are third, fifth and sixth on the team in starts.
The Colonials will begin the spring half of their season in March and are expected to contend for the Atlantic 10 Championship, May 2-4, at NCR Country Club in Dayton, OH.
