Women's Basketball Halts Hawks

WASHINGTON, DC (Jan. 20) - George Washington women's basketball broke Saint Joseph's 11-game winning streak with a 68-62 victory at Smith Center today, and remained undefeated in conference play.
Sophomore Cathy Joens, who was held scoreless against Temple on Friday, erupted for 24 points on 8-15 shooting, including 18 in the second half to lead the Colonials from a 30-29 halftime deficit. This was SJU's first loss this season after posting a 14-0 record when leading at the half.
The Hawks led by as much as nine points in the first half, but the Colonials made a late charge to close within one point at the break. GW used a 15-4 run over the first eight minutes of the second half to take a game-high 10-point lead, 44-34. SJU charged back, reeling off their own 14-4 run to pull even, 48-48 with the Colonials with 6:38 left in the game.
GW would take control in the final minutes, and pulled away and extended their lead to eight on a14-6 run for a 64-56 advantage with 45 seconds left in the game. SJU hit two desperation three point shots to pull within five, but the Colonials converted 4-6 free throws to hold off the Hawks' late surge.
Sophomore Ugo Oha added 14 points and junior Erica Lawrence chipped in with 12 points and nine rebounds. Senior Elena Vishniakova scored 10 first half points before leaving the game early in the second half after spraining her knee.
SJU (14-3, 5-1) was led by junior Colleen McGahan who scored 15 points on five three pointers. Senior Susan Moran, who entered the game ranked second in the nation in scoring with 24.5 points a game, was held to 14 points on 5-19 shooting as the Colonials keyed in on her defensively. Moran reached her 2,000th career point today when she converted a three-point play at 6:38 in the second half. Moran also recorded her ninth double-double of the season by collecting 10 rebounds in the losing effort.
GW (11-6, 6-0) returns to action on Thursday, Jan. 24, as they travel to Pittsburgh, PA to face conference rival Duquesne at 7:05 p.m.
