Baker, making his second appearance of the season, was masterful in his eight innings. He gave up four hits and struck out six while not walking a batter.
JMU starter, Dan Meyer, was almost as impressive. Meyer pitched a complete game three-hitter. He struck out four while walking one.
In the third, senior Nick Iovacchini (Asheville, NC/ Asheville) drew a leadoff walk. He advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by sophomore Jake Wald (Alexandria, VA/ T.C. Williams) and Dokoupil followed with a single to left.
The Dukes had a chance to tie the game in the ninth. Senior Bryan Beggs (Somerset, PA/ Somerset Area) relieved Baker and got the leadoff man out. JMU third baseman Brent Metheny followed with an infield single and advanced to second on a Iovacchini throwing error. With two out and Metheny on third, Beggs was able to get JMU leftfielder Steve Ballowe to ground to second to end the game.
GW returns to action on Saturday, March 10, at 12:00 p.m. when they play a doubleheader against the St. Peter’s Peacocks at Barcroft Park.
