9/21/2000 12:00:00 AM | Men's Golf
The 1996 ECAC Championship also was contested on the 6,600-yard, par-72 course. Kings Creek also hosted the 2000 Delaware State Open.
The event will be played over 36 holes, with an 8:00 a.m. shotgun start and a 1:30 p.m. shotgun start. Teams from as far away as Hamilton, NY, and from as nearby as Dover, DE, will compete in the event which is sponsored by the Delaware River and Bay Authority. The field for the tournament includes the University of Maryland which qualified for the NCAA Championship in 1999 and competes in the highly competitive Atlantic Coast Conference. Iona College, which won the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Championship in 2000 and participated in the 2000 NCAA Championship, will also participate. The Terrapins join Temple University, three-time NCAA Tournament participants during the 90s. Other teams to watch are the host GW Colonials, which won the 1999 St. Bonaventure Invitational, American University, which won three tournaments in 1999 (including the George Washington Invitational), and Colgate University, which recently won the Bucknell Invitational.
Although the field consists primarily of Division I schools, there also will be two Division III powers in the event. Both Western Maryland College, NCAA tournament qualifiers in 1997 and 1998 and Wesley College which finished 20th in the NCAA Division III Championship in 2000, will compete in the tournament.
Spectators are encouraged to check in at the Kings Creek pro shop for a tournament package with rosters and pairings. Contact GW golf coach Scott Allen or Sports Information Director Brad Bower for more information.
