BOYERTOWN, PA (May 18) - Junior 1B Dan Rouhier (McLean, VA/St. Albans) went 2 for 4 and scored a run to lead George Washington (37-19) to a 4-3 victory over St. Bonaventure (26-15) in 10 innings in the opening round of the Atlantic 10 Conference baseball tournament Thursday afternoon at Boyertown, PA. GW will play Virginia Tech (32-23) today at 4:05 p.m. in the second round. The Hokies defeated UMass (24-21) yesterday in another 4-3 contest.
Rouhier doubled for the first hit of the game in the second inning and put GW ahead 1-0 when he scored on a single by junior C Eric Mitchell (DuBois, PA/DuBois Area). Soph DH Travis Crowder (Manassas, VA/Osbourn) singled to right, driving in Mitchell.
GW added a third run in the eighth when, with two outs, senior 2B Ryan Dacey (Annapolis (MD) H.S.) walked and then scored on a double by soph 3B Matt Krimmel (Schnecksville, PA/Parkland), making the score 3-1.
After the Bonnies tied the score at 3 in the bottom of the ninth on a two-run homer, the Colonials took the lead in the top of the 10th and hung on in the bottom of the inning for the victory. Dacey, who walked to lead off the inning, scored the game winning run when he was balked home with one out.
Junior LHP Adam Belicic (Harrisburg, PA/Central Dauphin) pitched seven innings of three-hit ball for the Colonials, while junior RHP Brian Beggs (Somerset, PA/ Somerset Area), 5-4 during the regular season, hurled the final three innings for the postseason victory.
If GW wins today's 4:05 contest, it will play tomorrow (Saturday) at 12:35 p.m.; should the Colonials lose to Virginia Tech, it plays the winner of the UMass-St. Bonaventure contest tonight at 7:35 p.m. Weather-permitting, the double elimination tournament should conclude Saturday. Winner of the A-10 tourney will receive an automatic berth of the 2000 NCAA Division I
Baseball Tournament. Bids and seedings for the NCAA Baseball Tourney will be announced Monday, May 22, at 3 p.m. (EDT) on ESPN.
