Washington, DC - The George Washington baseball team lost to the University of Richmond 8-7 in a game that was highlighted by a controversial inside-the-park home run in the seventh inning at Pitt Field in Richmond, VA. Richmond improved to 19-23, while the Colonials dropped to 26-18.
The Colonials scored twice in the first. Sophomore Matt Krimmel (Schnecksville, PA/Parkland) had an RBI single and scored on a Richmond error.
The Spiders scored three times in the bottom of the first to put the Spiders ahead 3-2.
GW scored four times in the second to take a 6-3 lead. Freshman Jake Wald (Alexandria, VA/TC Williams) had an RBI single and scored on a sacrifice fly in the inning. Richmond scored twice in the fifth and each team scored once in the sixth as GW lead 7-6 after six innings.
The Spiders scored runs in the seventh and eighth innings to overcome the Colonials. Freshman Matt Craig (Dallas, TX/Trinity Christian) led off the bottom of the seventh inning for the Spiders with a shot to left field. Colonials' senior left fielder Matt Walker (Pittsburgh, PA) appeared to catch the ball, but hit the fence and fell as his foot got caught under the fence. Craig continued around the bases as Walker got his foot from underneath the fence and returned the ball to the infield. The umpires ruled no catch, leading to an argument and the ejection of two coaches and two players from George Washington. The home run tied the game at seven. The Spiders added a run in the eighth inning for the 8-7 seven advantage.
Sophomore Jason Baker hurled a complete game victory for the spiders, with seven hits, four earned runs, one walk and seven strikeouts.
The Colonials travel to Philadelphia, PA this weekend to take on conference opponent LaSalle in a three-game series. A double-header is scheduled to begin at noon on Saturday, with the final game set for 10 a.m. on Sunday.
