Junior pitcher Brian Beggs (Somerset, PA/Somerset) used a double-play and a fly-out in the ninth inning to shut down the Patriots and earn his second save of the year. Beggs pitched two innings, giving up no earned runs and striking-out two batters.
The Colonials again got a strong performance from their starting pitching. Junior Adam Belicic (Harrisburg, PA/Central Dauphin) pitched six innings, only allowing three runs to earn his second win of the year. The win improved his record to 2-3 for the year.
GW got on the board early as the Colonials used a RBI double by senior Ryan Dacey (Annapolis, MD/ Annapolis), and a RBI single by senior Matt Walker (Gibsonia, PA/South Carolina) to take a 2-0 lead in the first.
The Colonials added five more runs in the fourth inning. Sophomore Mike Bassett (Paramus, NJ/Paramus) hit a two-run homerun, and junior Eric Mitchell (Thurmont, MD/Dubois) singled home two runs to extend GW's lead to 7-1.
Dacey capped off the scoring for the Colonials in the eight inning with a sacrafice fly to right field that plated Mitchell.
The Patriots rallied late in the game to pull within one run, but could not score the tying run. The Patriots used a two-run homerun by Brian Forthofer in the seventh inning, and a two-run double in the eighth by Mark Gibbs to mount the comeback.
The win improves GW's record to 5-10, and the loss drops George Mason's record to 3-10.
The Colonials return to action this weekend when they host Pace University in a three game series at Barcroft Park. A double-header is scheduled to begin at 12:00 p.m Saturday March 11th, with the final game of the series Sunday at 12:00 p.m.
