Baseball Loses 7-6 to Virginia Tech

The Loss Drops the Colonials to 1-2 in the A-10
Washington, DC (March 26) - The George Washington baseball team lost to Virginia Tech 7-6 at Barcroft Park in Arlington, VA. The loss drops the Colonials to 15-13 on the season and 1-2 in the Atlantic 10 Conference.

Down 7-4 heading into the bottom of the ninth inning, the Colonials almost mounted a comeback. GW had bases loaded with two outs, but could not push the tying run across the plate as Virginia Tech's Anthony Miller struck-out the final batter to end the comeback.
The Colonials scored runs in each of the first three innings to take a 3-1 lead. Senior Ryan Dacey (Annapolis, MD/Annapolis) doubled home a run in the first inning, freshman Jake Wald (Alexandria, VA/T.C. Williams) singled a run home in the second inning, and sophomore Mike Bassett (Paramus, NJ/Paramus) hit a solo home run in the third for the Colonials. The Hokies scored their run in the third inning when John West hit a solo home run.
Virginia Tech took the lead in the fourth inning 4-3 by capitalizing on a GW error and scoring three unearned runs. The Colonials responded in the bottom half of the inning with junior Eric Mitchell's (Thurmont, MD/Dubois) solo home run, his second of the season, to even the score 4-4.
The score stayed tied until the seventh inning when the Hokies scored two runs to take a 6-4 lead. Ryan Murphy led off the inning with a double to left field, and then advanced to third when West reached on a Colonial error. Chad Foutz sinlged home Murphy for a 5-4 lead, and West later scored on a fielder's choice.
The Hokies added a run in the top of the ninth when Chad Hutchison doubled home a run to take a 7-4 lead.
Chip Runyon got the win for the Hokies, improving his record to 3-2, and Miller earned his six save of the season.
Sophomore Chris Worth (North Arlington, NJ/North Arlington) took the loss for the Colonials despite a strong performance, dropping his record to 3-5. Worth tossed six innings, only giving up two earned runs and striking-out four batters.
The Colonials return to action Tuesday when they travel to Emmitsburg, MD to take on Mt. St. Mary's at 3:00 p.m.
