With the game tied 3-3 heading into the bottom of the ninth, Bakich walked to start the frame and moved up when Bryant Ward reached on an errored sacrifice attempt. Molinari then hit one back up the middle to bring Bakich around for the winning run. Last weekend, Molinari also had a game-winning hit when ECU defeated Maryland 5-4 in 10 innings in Charleston, S.C.
"We beat a good baseball team today," said ECU head coach Keith LeClair. "We did some of the little things late in the game that makes a team good. We battled back all day. Sam (Narron) did a great job and kept us in the game early and Kieran Mattison and Glenn Tucker came in and shut them down. Overall, this was our best win this season."
After both teams went scoreless through the first five innings, George Washington (1-5) jumped ahead by scoring three runs in the sixth. Dan Rouhier doubled in Eric Mitchell before Mike Bassett hit a two run double for the 3-0 Colonial lead.
Sophomore transfer Kieran Mattison came on in relief of starter freshman Sam Narron in the sixth and shut down the Colonial offense. Narron finished the game going 5.2 innings allowing seven hits and three runs with two walks and two strikeouts. Mattison only allowed one base runner while going 1.1 innings without giving up a hit and striking out two. Freshman Glenn Tucker came in to pitch the eighth and went 2.0 hittless innings while striking out two to collect his first collegiate win.
East Carolina (6-1) cut the lead to two, 3-1, in the bottom of the sixth as Lee Delfino walked and moved to third on a wild pitch before scoring on a passed ball. After a scoreless seventh, ECU tied the game at 3-3 with two runs in the eighth. Molinari led off with a walk and moved to third on Nick Schnabel's base hit to left.
Delfino then walked to load the bases before John Williamson's sacrifice fly to left scored Molinari. Chad Tracy walked to fill the bags again before Joseph Hastings reached on a fielder's choice that scored Schnabel to tie the game.
Molinari finished 1-for-4 with a run and one RBI while Williamson and Hastings each had one RBI. Rouhier and Bassett each had two hits for the Colonials, who outhit the Pirates 7-6 in the contest. Bryan Beggs suffered the loss going 1.0 innings allowing one hit and one run while walking three.
East Carolina will be back in action on Wednesday, February 23 at 3:00 p.m. when the Pirates travel to Chapel Hill to take on North Carolina.
