DeLAND (February 13) -- One day after surrendering 20 hits, George Washington unleashed its own offensive barrage as the Colonials rapped 19 hits en route to a 12-6 win over Stetson, Sunday at Melching Field at Conrad Park.
The loss drops Stetson to 4-2 overall. The Colonials avoid the season-opening sweep and improve to 1-2.
George Washington broke open a scoreless game in the third on Matt Walker's two-run double. Stetson responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth, scoring both runs on an error by GW catcher Eric Mitchell and tying the game at two.
But Stetson starter Charles Aulet (0-1), who was effective through four innings, lost control in the fifth as the Colonials scored three runs to take control of the game. Tony Brown opened the inning with a single and advanced to third on an error by leftfielder Frank Corr. He then scored on a single and GW added two more runs on a solo homer by Matt Krimmel and a fielding error by Hatter pitcher Steve Parker, who replaced Aulet.
Ryan Dacey collected five hits, all singles, for the Colonials and Walker was 4-for-5 with three RBI. For Stetson, Frank Corr was the only Hatter with more than one hit, going 2-for-2.
The Hatters return to action when they host St. Peter's in a three-game series, beginning 1 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 19 at Melching Field.
