Doubles Teams Lead The Way In Maryland Invitational

COLLEGE PARK, MD (Sept. 25, 1999) -- Two of George Washington's three doubles teams won their first round matches yesterday in the Maryland Invitational Tournament.
The pair of Ghada Skaff and Sarine Weingarten recorded an 8-2 victory over West Virginia's Pintaric and Kempton in the top half of the first flight. The duo of Tracy Wei and Katarina Stastny picked up an 8-4 win over West Virginia's Earles and Carlson in the bottom half of the first flight.
In quarterfinal action, Skaff and Weingarten will play William & Mary's talented pair Coulter and Sullivan at noon Saturday. Wei and Stastny will face Syracuse's Lai and Khualina at noon on Saturday also.
The GW pair of Susie Coggin and Lisa Borromeo lost their first match in the second flight Friday 8-6 in a hard-fought contest against George Mason's Ihnat and Thayaprasat. GW's pair will play West Virginia's Unger and Price at noon Saturday in the consolation bracket.
GW did not fare as well in singles play. Weingarten lost in the first flight, 7-6, 6-0, to Maryland's Bittles. She then lost, 6-0, 7-6, to Syracuse's Khualina in the consolation bracket. Skaff fell 6-3, 6-0, to Maryland's Brunner in the first round of the second flight. She then lost 6-1, 2-6, 6-4, in a tough duel to Syracuse's Neveklovska in the consolation bracket.
GW had a bit of singles success in the third flight. Statsny picked up a 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 victory over George Mason's Ihnat in the first round. Stastny fell in the second round, 6-1, 6-2, to Syracuse's Thompson.
Wei fought back after losing the first set to pick up a first round victory over West Virginia's Underwood 0-6, 6-2, 6-2. Wei then lost to William & Mary's Partlow 6-2, 6-0, in the second round. Susie Coggin lost her first match of the flight to American's Martin, 6-0, 6-2. She rallied for a win over George Mason's Rodriguez, 6-1, 6-4, in the consolation bracket, and will play West Virginia's Underwood Saturday afternoon.
Ashley Lucia lost her fourth flight match to West Virginia's Carlson, 6-1, 6-0. She will play Syracuse's Sargent in the consolation bracket Saturday afternoon. Borromeo fell to George Mason's Jansson, 6-1, 6-1, in fourth flight action. She will play Maryland's Cabiling in the consolation bracket Saturday afternoon.
