WASHINGTON, DC (Aug. 12, 1999) -- The George Washington University baseball team has signed five student-athletes to National Letters of Intent for the 2000 season, head baseball Coach Tom Walter announced today.
With the five additions joining the four student-athletes who signed early in the fall of 1998, Coach Walter has added depth to a team that saw eight seniors depart after the 1999 season.
The five student-athletes are:
Chris Barry, a shortstop from Orchard Park, NY, and a graduate of Canisius High School. "Chris is a tremendous athlete and can play any of three infield positions," Walter said.
Marc Cappelletti, a left-handed pitcher from Berwyn, PA, and a graduate of Conestoga High School. "Marc is a quality left-handed pitcher who has a great feel for pitching. He is very polished and should see time immediately," Walter said.
Glen Skutnik, a right-handed pitcher from Lorton, VA, and a graduate of Hayfield High School. "Glen has good command of three quality pitchers and should be in the GW rotation as early as freshman year," Walter said.
Rob Ritter, a catcher from Johnstown, PA, and a graduate of Conemaugh Valley High School. "A good defensive catcher, Rob should be GW's number two catcher in the upcoming season," Walter said.
Matt Walker, a transfer from the University of South Carolina and a Pittsburgh, PA native, will play in the outfield. "Matt will hit in the middle of the order and play every day for the Colonials in 2000," Walter said.
The baseball team finished 27-30 and tied for second in the Atlantic 10 Conference West Division.
