"Dominika has great accomplishments to her credit and has a great personality that I feel will mesh well with our team," said Head Coach Greg Munoz. "She entered her collegiate career with a world ranking and earned several notable victories while at South Carolina, so she knows what it takes to excel in the sport and I expect her to be a great influence on our program."
"I am very excited to work with the women's tennis program here at GW and help build upon high expectations and achieve great results," Coach Kanakova said. "I am thrilled to be a part of a team that is full of both talented and motivated student-athletes."
A four-year letter winner from South Carolina and a native of Frydek-Mistek, Czech Republic, Coach Kanakova garnered several accolades throughout her playing career, particularly in doubles competition. As a rookie, Coach Kanakova became the first player in school history to end the season with a national doubles ranking with two different partners. She peaked as high as the No. 26 doubles tandem in the nation during her senior year, and earned a victory over the eventual NCAA Doubles Champion duo and No. 1 team in the nation from Alabama.
In 2013 and 2014, Coach Kanakova became the first Gamecock since 2002 to earn consecutive bids to the NCAA Doubles Championship. She tied the school record for No. 1 doubles victories against SEC opponents with a 7-4 mark her senior season and wrapped her career ranked eighth in South Carolina history with 74 total doubles wins. Coach Kanakova finished her four seasons at South Carolina with an overall singles record of 55-42 and a doubles record of 74-47.
Prior to joining the Gamecocks, Coach Kanakova was ranked No. 650 on the Women's Tennis Association (WTA) list of top female players in the world, while she also reached as high as No. 723 for singles and No. 645 for doubles by the WTA. Coach Kanakova's junior career was highlighted by a No. 185 ranking in the world by the International Tennis Federation (ITF) junior circuit.
A four-year member of the SEC Academic Honor Roll, a Dean's List student and ITA Scholar Athlete, Coach Kanakova graduated in May with bachelor's degrees in finance and risk management and insurance, as well as a minor in psychology.
