Andras Levai joined GW men's water polo as a graduate assistant coach in August 2022 following an All-American career in Buff and Blue.
Over five seasons with the program, Levai helped secure a pair of Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Conference titles and received All-Conference honors three times, including in 2019 when he was tabbed to the ACWPC All-America list.
The Budapest, Hungary, native capped his decorated career during the fall of 2021 by leading the Buff and Blue in goals (45), assists (27), points (72) and field blocks (15) on the way to All-MAWPC Second Team honors.
Levai is set to assist Head Coach Barry King while completing his master's in Communication Management this fall.
"It is always great for us to have decorated alums return to the coaching staff," King said. "Andras' experience within our program is incredibly valuable to this team, and as a graduate assistant, he will continue his mentorship of Adrija Sekulic.
"Andras has been such a big part of the biggest moments in program history – those experiences will serve as motivation for our group."
Levai cemented his place among the program's all-time greats during a history-making run under King's leadership. The gifted lefty ranks tied for third in program history with 484 points after totaling 279 goals and 205 assists from 2017-2021. He's also among the top five all-time in both steals (185) and field blocks (46).
Back in 2017, Levai was named Most Outstanding Rookie at the MAWPC Championship after helping GW secure its first conference title, and he ranked second on the club with 139 points (72 goals, 67 assists) as a sophomore in 2018 when the Buff and Blue repeated and secured their first NCAA win to advance to the national quarterfinals.
Levai piled up a career-high 150 points via 88 goals and 62 assists as a junior in 2019 to earn his first All-Conference selection and All-America distinction. That point total ranks third for a single season in program history.
Before coming to Foggy Bottom, Levai gained experience at the top levels of the sport as a member of Hungary's junior national team and helped his KSI club to win three junior national championships.
"I am extremely excited and grateful to be joining the water polo team once again, this time from the sidelines," said Levai, who earned his undergraduate degree in Marketing with a minor in Film Studies in May 2021. "I've always wanted to test myself as a coach, and getting that opportunity working with this team under Barry is going to be both fun and a great learning experience.Â
"I couldn't be more grateful to GW, and I'm really looking forward to this season!"
